Make priorities and progress visible
- Think about a recent piece of work your team received. How did it reach you, and what happened next?
- If someone wanted to know what was happening with that work, how would they find out?
- Where can people see incoming requests alongside the work the team has already agreed to do?
- How do you keep that picture up to date when the work or priorities change?
Agree where you’re going and what comes first
- When new work comes in, how do you decide what needs attention first?
- How do people understand why a piece of work matters to the organisation?
- How are the options considered before people, time or money are committed?
- When a new request affects existing commitments, how is the choice made and shared with the teams involved?
Work out what needs doing
- Before someone starts, how do you work out what needs doing, who will do it and what ‘finished’ looks like?
- How do the people asking for the work and those doing it agree on what is needed?
- When work needs to be split into smaller parts, how do you decide what those parts are and how they fit together?
- What happens when the work is unclear or needs something from another team?
Help teams work together
- How do you bring in the people needed to understand and carry out the work?
- When work passes between people or teams, what is shared and how do they know who is responsible next?
- When one team is waiting on another, how do they agree what happens next?
- How do teams review the way they work together and put improvements into use?
Get work back on track
- How do you notice when work is taking longer than expected, building up or producing the wrong result?
- When that happens, how do you find out what is causing it?
- How do people agree whether to change the approach, get more help, adjust the work or stop it?
- After a change is made, how do you tell whether it is helping?
Help people put change into practice
- Are leaders actively backing the change and clear about why it matters?
- Do the people affected understand what will change and have a say in it?
- Are people ready to use the new way of working?
- Will people have the tools, information and help they need?
