Work out where a project really stands

When progress is unclear or confidence in the plan is falling, a shared picture helps leaders decide what needs attention.

Find out what is happening

Compare what was agreed with what has been completed and what remains. Talk with the team and the leader responsible. Missing information creates uncertainty; establish the facts before deciding what needs to change.

Understand what is holding up the work

Look at whether people understand the work, have the time and skills it needs, and can get decisions made. Make work waiting on other teams visible, including what those teams have agreed to provide.

Make the choices clear

Explain the practical options: continue with support, change the order, reduce the work or stop parts of it. Show what each choice means for time, funding, people and the result the organisation wants.

Keep the picture current

Once a decision is made, agree responsibilities and realistic commitments. Keep unresolved issues visible and review progress often enough for leaders and teams to act while it is still useful.
